Teaching

I will be accepting private students for instruction in drawing and oil painting. Because of the highly personalized nature of this instruction, class size is very limited. Classes run in 5 week sessions, one day a week, 3 hours per class.

Basic Drawing: In order for a student to be successful in painting, they should have a basic command of certain drawing skills including: creating basic 3 dimensional form through modeling (shading), basic linear perspective, values, line and gesture. Ideal for someone who has had no art instruction in the past and would like to move on to oil painting. Depending upon prior experience, students should expect to enroll in 2 or 3 five weeks sessions before enrolling in Beginning Oil Painting.

Beginning Oil Painting: The basics of oil painting are taught from the ground up: use of materials, values, basic composition, basic colour mixing and colour harmony as well as creating the illusion of 3 dimensional form. The primary subject is the still life and the approach is that of the classical and academic schools. Students are encouraged to enroll for a minimum of 10 weeks (one day a week, 3 hours per session) to establish a basic command of the medium. No prior oil painting experience is required, although a basic facility with drawing is strongly encouraged.

Continued Oil Studies: This is an open enrollment class allowing students to enroll for shorter periods of time (5 weeks) and on an on-going basis. Explore more complex ideas and techniques in oil such as atmosphere, aerial perspective, abstract design, proportional relationships as well as advanced painting techniques. Students will be strongly encouraged to explore and develop their unique style of painting.
