About the Artist

Quietly working in the studio,  a painter looks up  and sees the light has shifted on her subject.  In that moment, with one small chage from nature, everything comes to life and falls into place.  That "certain something" has been revealed,  just for a moment, and it is the job of the artist to capture it.  These are the type of everyday miracles that  propelled Materese Roche to make a transition from a life in the corporate world to a life in the studio.

As a child, she remembers pouring through art books and being entranced by two telling paintings; Thomas Gainsboroughs', The Blue Boy, and Pierre Reniors', Dance at Bougival.  One painting powerfully representational, the other emotionally stirring;  a combination she would strive to mesh as an adult artist.

Materese studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, the Barnes Foundation and with several highly respected Bucks County artists.  And although they  taught her the technical aspects of painting and the understanding beauty, she learned very quickly that no one could teach her how to see; to see the thing that makes any subject unique.  "That" she says "is something  you learn, and earn, on your own".

Her interest lies in the essence of the subject. She is as fascinated by the technical aspects of light patterns and angles as much as the contrasts between the clarity and blur of nature. She seeks to incorporate all of her senses into her paintings; the feeling of air on her skin, the smell of salt air, the quiet in her studio, and it is this integration that makes her work distinct.

In a world where so much mystery has been explained and technology encroaches upon us, Materese has a clarity of vision that lets her continue to search, not for the answers, but for universal truths. It is through her paintings that one can discover what she has found.

Materese lives and maintains her studio on a mid 1800's  farm in Buckingham, PA where she paints and teaches privately to a beloved group of students.
